As the dreaded Covid-19 virus popularly known as coronavirus continues to spread worldwide, many truth and lies have been circulated on social media and other sources. One of such claims states that alcohol kills coronavirus.
Alcohol kills coronavirus
A screenshot going viral on social media platforms and messaging apps claims that alcohol kills coronavirus. The screenshot also claims to be a news story from CNN.
But that is completely untrue. No such stories can be found on the website of CNN. Also nothing of such can be found on a search through all social media platforms and YouTube channel of CNN. No such news was aired on CNN.
It is very clear that this story is false and does not come from CNN. The screenshot is clearly a creation to create panic. The picture of a CNN News staff has been manipulated to add the deceptive text. This same picture have been used since 2017 to peddle many lies.
The claim that alcohol kills coronavirus is completely untrue and should not be taken serious. There is no known cure for coronavirus as at this moment.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) states on its website:
Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body will not kill viruses that have already entered your body. Spraying such substances can be harmful to clothes or mucous membranes (i.e. eyes, mouth). Be aware that both alcohol and chlorine can be useful to disinfect surfaces, but they need to be used under appropriate recommendations.
While alcohol can be helpful and is recommended for those taking care of people with the virus, it does not kill the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises the use of alcohol based product for washing of hands.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
